Technorati is partnering with Film Independent, the non-profit behind the Independent Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, to provide live coverage including photos and videos of today's Spirit Awards via Spirit Awards LIVE blog. They're giving our own Aaron Krane full backstage access to set up all the camera, photo, and internet equipment he'll need to provide live blog coverage, including photos and video. Start coming back to Film Independent's blog at around 12:00 PM PST for the behind the scenes scoop, with plenty of celeb cameos (A-List all the way).
Aaron tells me he's already seen lots of amazing people he can't show you until the show starts, but rest assured he'll be giving you full access via Film Independent's blog as soon as the festivities begin.

According to Aaron, Technorati's BuzzTV is right in the front row next to Access Hollywood - I'm looking for some of the backstage fun that he can capture when nobody else is looking.
The plane was only a half-hour late, so I got to have dinner with Doc and Jake Shapiro, who runs PRX. Jake's a Berkman Fellow, and a helluva smart guy who caught me up with the latest goings-on in the world of public media, from the inside.
Doc's an old-time radio guy as well, and for about half the conversation, the two of them were happily chatting about all these different radio stations around the country,the growth of religious broadcasting, the loss of university radio stations, and the FCC. This kind of stuff is fascinating to me, especially all the history around NPR, PRI, and the relationship of the national organizations to the individual stations.
It was all a great insight into the stuff going on in the daily lives of talented radio professionals.
I was really glad, though, when the conversation turned to life after spectrum scarcity. It seems to me that there's an enormous opportunity out there - a 'blue-sky' moment - where these trusted organizations can embrace the changes that are coming in a world where the net is a utility. In this world, you don't need a big 25,000 Watt transmitter, you don't need FCC regulation, and you don't need a big expensive studio to support all of this. It also means that you can have a radically different relationship with the people formerly known as your audience.
What would happen if you had an all-net set of streams (or podcasts) that took the best from the local community, used the public radio editors as curators and had them select the best from the community? I bet that local reporting would increase - there's always going to be someone covering the schol board meetings, wouldn't that be great to have the local public media make their reports available? Or local sports - there's bound to be some people who will be incented to take the effort if they knew that they could get exposure on their public radio station. How about letting people vote on the best programs, and putting them on the air, or get them highlighted on the homepage of the site?
In other words, what happens when spectrum scarcity goes away? This isn't coming overnight, but I read a recent study noting that the US now has over 50% broadband penetration, and growing. Mobile phones and services are coming that will provide affordable data plans - and when those data streaming rates are over 64K or so, it gets REALLY easy to stream high-quality audio right to your cell phone or car audio system. The technology is already far superior to that, it just hasn't seen serious adoption yet, but it will, in the next few years. So what do you do when you have an infinite number of choices when you get into your car because your car is enabled with mobile net access? Why not let the people formerly known as your viewers upload their own stories, their own oral histories and viral videos, and make the public broadcasting station be the hub for all of this creativity at a local scale?
The other thing that really caught my attention was around VRM and identity, and how public radio/television world can benefit. I posed a thought experiement: What if we made it really easy to pay for things that we liked on public radio and TV? How about using a shortcode from your mobile phone to 'vote' on your favorite shows while they're playing? Think 'American Idol' style, and you'll immediately see how interesting and lucrative this could be. First off, you're getting your listeners and viewers more active, and what they do has an immediate effect. But what also happens is that the people formerly known as the audience are then in control - they don't get signed up on a list, they don't have to give their name, address, and credit card number . So here was the thought experiment: What if you made a policy that you'd never collect or sell personal information about your donors? And what if you made it really really easy for people to become donors, like using that mobile code to vote for the story they just heard? What if you really put the listener in charge?
It might be too early for that yet, given only the 50% broadband penetration. But wouldn't it be a great experiment?
Doc and I are going to have the opportunity to have that conversation with a bunch of public radio and television execs today. I'm looking forward to it.
Back to some more Davos videos - I had the wonderful experience of bumping into Dr. Tero Ojanpera in line waiting to get into one of the afterparties at the WEF meeting in Davos. He gave me a closer look at his phone, and at the Widsets he uses, which are sort of like widgets for your phone. The gadgets he has are very cool, but how he uses them gives a glimpse into the future - a future of notifications to always-on devices that you carry with you. Enjoy the video:
I'm heading to Boston next week for the upcoming Public Media Conference. I'll be speaking there on Wednesday morning, doing a keynote conversation with Doc Searls, who, as a former radio DJ, has far more qualifications than me to speak to a bunch of Public Radio and TV execs, but we always have a good time. I'm looking forward to it.
I'm also bringing my camera, and looking for anyone in Boson who wants to get together and go for a photowalk around the city. I'll be arriving Monday evening, so that's a possibility, but more likely would be a walk around Tuesday evening, perhaps starting an hour or two before sunset, and going through to twilight. Anyone up for it? If so, leave a comment below with a suggestion on where to meet and if you're willing to help organize things. So far I've done this in Paris and in London, and it is always a really fun time.

I've been addicted this morning to the list of new WTFs that people are writing - really interesting stuff! You can see the explanations that people all around the web are making on topics that they know about. We're also getting LOTS of great feedback from all of you out on the web about the new feature, and we're listening really carefully.
First off, performance and continuing scalability of the core Technorati service is still job #1. We've actually been growing pretty significantly over the last few months, so lot of our time and energy is being spent on continuing to build out the core service, and make sure that searches work well, all the time. We're also continuing to expand our work at finding and eliminating spam from our indexes, to make sure that your feeds are only filled with the best and most interesting results, not spam or plagiarism.
We're also working very hard on making Technorati's services more relevant and timely and easy to understand for the non-blogger - the person who isn't a hard-core blogger, but wants to know what's gong on around a particular item or topic, and to be able to participate with a community of like-minded people as well. Hopefully, that participation will make everyone's experience better, and make Technorati more useful to everyone.
Keep all the great comments and feedback coming - this conversation is really important to us, especially when you tell us what you don't like, it's the best way for us to learn about how to better be of service to you. Sometimes it is a humbling experience but in the end, this is all about serving you, and providing you with the best possible service.
In the end, we're a startup of 40 people, and we're working on some pretty ambitious stuff to help make your experience of the web a more fun, satisfying one. So, I apologize for the glitches and issues, we're going to continue to make the service better, faster, and more glitch-free. And we're also going to continue to roll out new products and services that lead the way around exposing the Live Web - the real-time web. Remember when Web 1.0 companies of the late nineties ran all those expensive ads during the Superbowl? Well we Web 2.0 companies like to think we've moved beyond that irrational exuberance to something much better: rational exuberance. Or maybe we're just not as rich!
But at any rate, we’re definitely not buying the same TV spots during the Big Game that companies like Webvan and Pets.com did a few years ago. Times have changed, and so have methods. So when a company called Meebo asked us to join their viral Super-Bowl ad campaign, we were all for it.
Meebo, Meez, Multiply, Plaxo, RockYou.com and Technorati have all banded together to produce some of our own citizen Super-Bowl ads, and we're not running them on TV, we're running them on YouTube, of course.
We took the opportunity to promote our new feature, WTF, but frankly, it was just a lot of fun. So follow the link, watch our ad, and those of our fellow startups! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did, because after all, our goal is always to be of service, even if it’s just making you laugh.
