Guy Kawasaki Interview / Link count update

IMG_0260Guy Kawasaki has put up an interview with me that we did over email a couple of weeks ago. Guy was the first person I'd ever heard called a technology evangelist, and I've followed his career since he was at Apple in the 1980's and I was in high school in New York, hearing about magical places called Mountain View, Cupertino, and Palo Alto. His book The Macintosh Way changed my life, and molded the way that I think about products and the companies that build them. Guy was also one of the people that I'd always wanted to meet, but for some reason, we'd never had the chance until earlier this year, when I had the opportunity to give him a signed Technorati t-shirt (I learned from the master) when he entered the Technorati 100.

By the way, you may notice that the Top 100 may jump around a little this week, or that some non-blogs (or blog hosting tools) may occasionally sneak in for a short time - we're doing some maintenance on that code, and I apologize in advance if you see anything wonky. We're doing a major rollout of our link counting system this week which will make it more accurate and show updates more quickly. Because link counts had gotten stalled for some people in the past, we're clearing out a lot of the backlog over the next week or two, and this may cause a bit of strangeness with some of our applications like the Top 100.

The goal is to make sure that Technorati is always accurate, responsive, and comprehensive. Sorry if you see some mess over the next few weeks as we fully roll this new system into production.

David, I initially missed the link to your blog in the interview and so posted what follows as a comment on Guy's blog, but i think I'm talking directly to you so I repeat it here.

A very timely interview for me in light of my cry for help. http://makemarketinghistory.blogspot.com/2006/07/100-days-of-blogitude_09.html

However, I fear that on the technical issues, I'm still drowning in a mass of incomprehension. To repeat myself, it's long past time when there should be non geeky guidance out there especially if blogging is to be truly egalitarian.

As an editor for a company that has nearly 100 blogs registered in Technorati, I'm well aware that your system sometimes has fits and starts. And I also notice often that it's still hands-down the most "accurate, responsive, and comprehensive" source of post, blog and blogger information on the Web. Congrats on Trati's continued growth, Dave!

Dave,

I have a question: If I'd technorati-chart the graph with the word so generic such as "blog", does the chart represent the blog seasonality say over a year? Or, is it the trend always upward, since technoati index more blogs over time?

Thanks.

Dave,
Good luck with another week of fighting the good fight! You're doing amazing things and you never seem to ruffle. Your interview was a compelling read. I second Easton's sentiments.

Hi Dave,

Technorati has become a routine tool for my online use and I really enjoy its features. Since you're talking about possibly wonkiness from Technorati, I thought I'd let you know about a glitch I noticed.

Today I tried using the Technorati searchlet on my blog and found it unable to provide results for just my blog. Previously it had worked just fine.

This prompted me to go look for reasons why. First I dumped the javascript from my template and went direct to the hmtl searchlet. That didn't do anything.

Now I've figured out that it appears to be just my site (I only tried a few) that has the glitch. At first I thought it was all blogger blogs (blogspot.com) but turns out, it's not.

Try looking up "house" on the Phantom Professor's blogspot blog...

http://technorati.com/search/house?from=http://phantomprof.blogspot.com
Works fine

Now try it on my blog.

nope, nada. Doesn't work.

Anyway, I thought you might want to know.

Kind Regards, O

As an author, I've had the check-the-Amazon-ranking disease for a couple of years now. As a fairly new blogger, well, you know where I'm going with this. I'm happy to hear that my Technorati rankings won't be jumping back and forth with such maddening rapidity. Which, by the way, is more of a reflection on my obsessiveness than on Technorati's "wonkiness."

But, hey, you gotta keep score somehow, right?
