The gracious folks from one.org have procured 10 backstage press passes to each of 5 of the following Live 8 concerts - Philadelphia, Paris, Rome, Berlin, and Tokyo. The folks at one.org and Live 8 believe that bloggers can help to shape the media and bring a new voice and perspective - and help to set the agenda - before the G8 conference in Scotland. (BTW, check out their new blog.
In addition, Richard Branson of Virgin Airlines has donated his airplane to fly the Live 8 crew from New York to Edinburgh and back, and up to five bloggers will be given the opportunity to fly to Edinburgh and back with the Live 8 group. The idea is to blog the trip, including the beginning of the G8 summit. The flight departs from JFK in New York at 7 p.m. on July 3; the same airplane will bring the bloggers and whoever else back to New York on July 7. Lodging in or near Edinburgh will also be provided.
So, here's what's up: This is a call to bloggers to give all of you the opportunity to get one of these backstage passes, and possibly on the flight to Edinburgh. Think of all the cool stuff you can do - set up a podcast and interview the bands, make a great photoblog, videoblog it, heck maybe you can end up playing air guitar in front of millions, who knows?
Seriously, the goal of this is also to get millions of bloggers posting about Live 8 - the fact is that there are 30,000 children dying in Africa every day - no one is reporting on it, and we aren't doing anything about it. So one of the goals is to help set the agenda of the mainstream media, and this represents a moment of pregnant possibility - for bloggers to create proactive change, not just reactive change based on other news events. It is our opportunity to help to shape the news conversation for the good of us all. And for our leaders to hear the voices of millions when they sit down at the G8 meeting.
So, here's what you need to do:
There may be additional credentials that we can get from the Live 8 people, and Joe, John, and I are going to work our butts off to get credentials for the other shows as well, including Toronto and the shows in Great Britain. More to come. In the meantime, please go out and listen, read, and blog - together perhaps we can help to shift the conversation, and influence country policies to help to make poverty history.

Please visit my blog space which has ideas on how to get governments to substantially contribute to overseas aid programs, in a step to finally make poverty history. However, it needs support from people like you in order for it to happen.
Thanks for your time,
Alex

Posted by: Nicolas at June 30, 2005 8:40 AMDear sir or madam.
Could you please forward this letter to all people involved in Live8 and the one campaign as it is an overriding factor concerning us all
Action not years of deliberation is what is needed NOW and for collective action we must all be aware of the true situation regarding our environment
Changes must take place NOW in order to secure a future that is sustainable.
Fellow Earthling.
With regard to the LIVE8;
Though it is true that many thousands of children are dying needlessly each day and something has to be done about it there is an equally pressing issue facing the whole planet together "Global warming".
The issues of global warming have been persistently argued by politicians and green activists for many years now whilst all the time emissions have not reduced significantly to make any real difference. Recent scientific experiments have shown that not only are the ice caps melting due to holes in the ozone layer but the oceans of the world are becoming more acidic. The time scale for all of this is very small and there are serious questions as to whether the sea life will have enough time to evolve to deal with these increased acidity levels. I recently sent a letter to the Prime Minister Tony Blair urging him to seriously consider creating a production line of hydrogen vehicles available to the general public in order to change car emissions; further to this I added that since the industrial revolution we have been using fossil fuels to drive a vast majority of engineering and production. It is now time to redesign our technology to eradicate all forms of machinery that use fossil fuels and to press forward with new design based on the hydrogen engine where H2O is the only bi-product. If we save millions of lives it will be for naught if we continue to make no real lasting changes to the way we live with our environment.
For if nothing is done within the next 5 years we will have crossed the line too far to come back and the whole planet will eventually fade and die. So I urge all those who feel a sense of duty and consciousness to make sure that the leaders of the G8 make some serious lasting commitment to radically change the way we power our systems today with as much urgency as if the planet were to be hit by a meteorite then maybe and only maybe there might be enough time to save not only all endangered species but also the human race.
Yours sincerely

Hi David. Still no news from Italian Live8 in Rome, about my pass. I've got another one, thanks to some friends, but not for the backstage.
Have you got any contacts?
Posted by: Alberto Puliafito at July 1, 2005 8:55 AMAlthough well intentioned the Television coverage in the States of Live 8 was absolutely horrible. Cutting away from Pink Floyd in the middle of a song several times not only angered me but turned me off to the whole Live 8 concept. Pink Floyd was not the only artist abruptly cut off... it was done to Elton John, Maroon 5, Coldplay, Bon Jovi... very annoying. The more I think about it the more I say F*&^ Live 8.
